"MATCHBOOK OF A HEART" - short film /
notes
"Matchbook of a Heart" is a short
horror film produced in Louisville, KY. Set entirely in "Old
Louisville" (the largest existing Victorian neighborhood in the USA) the
aesthetic approach avoids the rapid edits and music video saturation that
dominates many new horror movies. Not that they're bad or lame or anything - we
just seem to gravitate towards SLOW creepy things and the "unquiet
grave."
This project has been coming together for several
years now(!) and I'm so grateful to all the artists, actors, photographers,
writers and humans that have so unselfishly helped bring it to life. I'm gonna
get a tear up in my eye if I go on so - a big, big THANK YOU to all involved.
What is it, anyway? 12 minutes give or take...
The direct inspirations are films like George
Romero's tragic, quiet "Martin", David Cronenberg's "The Dead
Zone" and Akira Kurosawa's "Stray Dog."
"Matchbook of a Heart" stars Akiko
Aizawa, Leon Ingulsrud and Stephen Webber of the NY based SITI Co. I've worked
(as a member of the indie band Rachel's) with this experimental theater group
since 2001. Our most recent collaboration was the play
"Systems/Layers" - presented at the Krannert Center for the
Performing Arts, Champaign-Urbana, in 2005.
"Matchbook..." also stars Jason Skaggs,
a local musician and non-actor. His band, Gold Jacket Club, performed the score
for the film.
We completed the final edit in March of 2008... and it premiered September 2008.
